My name is Michael Smith, CLSS. I help supervisors become trusted, consistent leaders employees will follow.
Trust and consistency are the backbone of good leadership. Without them, even good processes break down.
Why this work matters
In warehouse and manufacturing environments, supervisors directly affect morale, execution, accountability, retention, safety, and productivity.
A supervisor who gives mixed signals can create confusion fast. A supervisor who avoids accountability can teach the team that standards are optional. A supervisor who shows favoritism can lose trust that is hard to rebuild.
But a supervisor who leads by example, communicates clearly, reinforces standards fairly, and follows through can change the tone of an entire shift.
My Experience
I have spent more than 13 years in manufacturing and 9 years in warehouse operations. I understand the pace, pressure, and people challenges that come with trying to keep an operation running.
Throughout my career, I have seen the same challenges appear again and again: different supervisors enforcing different standards, employees receiving mixed messages, accountability applied inconsistently, new supervisors promoted without enough development, and operations leaders spending too much time solving people problems instead of operational problems.
Over time, I realized many operational issues are not caused by a lack of processes. They are caused by inconsistent leadership.
That belief is what led me to create Open Book Operations.
What I Believe
Good supervisors build five things consistently.
Trust
Employees need to believe leadership will be fair, honest, and consistent.
Consistency
Standards cannot change depending on the person, shift, or situation.
Accountability
Expectations must be reinforced clearly and respectfully.
Lead by Example
Supervisors set the tone through what they do, not just what they say.
Fair Standards
The same expectations should apply to everyone, including high performers.
